Voice

Our Speech Language Pathologists can assist clients with voice disorders by providing them with exercises, vocal hygiene resources, and direct intervention utilizing different techniques to strengthen and protect their voice according to their goals and needs.

We have all experienced problems with our voices, times when the voice is hoarse or when sound will not come out at all. Colds, allergies, bronchitis, exposure to irritants such as ammonia, or cheering for your favorite sports team can result in a loss of voice. Voice problems can occur for a variety of medical reasons, including vocal cord nodules and polyps, and vocal cord paralysis.

Symptoms of a voice problem may include:

  • Hoarseness
  • Breathiness
  • A "rough" voice
  • A "scratchy" voice
  • Harshness
  • Shooting pain from ear to ear
  • A "lump in the throat" sensation
  • Neck pain
  • Limited pitch and loudness variations
  • Voicing that lasts only for a very short time (around 1 second)
  • Choking or coughing while eating
